Psychotherapy

What is Depth Psychotherapy?

I practice within the tradition of Depth Psychology, an interdisciplinary approach to human understanding rooted in the more subtle, unconscious aspects of human experience. The main intellectual roots of Depth Psychology come from the work of both Freud and Carl Jung, while history has given rise to several tributaries of their work. Drawing upon the social sciences, critical theory, art and literature, philosophy, contemporary neuroscience and trauma studies, Depth Psychotherapy acknowledges the dynamics between our conscious and our unconscious mind, and seeks to understand and connect our varied behaviors, particular thought processes, and relationship patterns with unresolved or unprocessed emotional experiences in our lives.

What can one expect from this process?

Throughout the course of therapy, as you explore your emotions, thought processes, patterns, and behaviors, previously exiled feelings and parts of self can emerge to be acknowledged and more safely explored in relation to the therapist. One of the primary goals in the course of treatment is to develop a more connected and alive relationship to your inner life, with a more subtle emotional palette. Over time, you gain a more nuanced understanding about the nature of what has kept you stuck in destructive patterns, limiting your choices of behaviors and expressions. As your awareness grows, previous behaviors and patterns begin to shift and you become freer to align with more authentic ways of being; you become more trusting, grounded, autonomous, and confident, with a greater capacity for intimacy and an increased ability to accept and adapt to change.

For Appointments

Psychotherapy sessions meet once or twice a week for 50 minutes. Depending on your circumstances, you may benefit by coming to therapy more often, or in a psychoanalytic treatment. Because consistency is important for the therapeutic process, I do not meet at a frequency of less than once a week.

If you are interested in scheduling an appointment, please call me to arrange an initial phone consultation at no charge. We can talk about what’s bringing you to therapy to see if it feels like we are a good match to work together. If it feels like a fit, we will schedule a few in-person consultation appointments to gather a deeper understanding of your presenting concerns and goals for therapy. If we’re not a match, I have a list of quality referrals to other colleagues and organizations that may better fit you.
