Each relationship between therapist and patient is highly unique, with it’s own emotional textures, language, idioms, and trajectories. One of the most valuable aspects of consultation is the space to “widen the aperture” on the clinical situation, and to see from another angle that which is perhaps too close to observe, or is perhaps not yet in focus enough, for the clinical dyad. I enjoy the process of two minds thinking together in fresh ways, about both one’s patient and one’s self.
In offering my help as a consultant, I draw from various sources in contemporary psychoanalysis, as well as work from the Independent Tradition, or the British Middle School. I am also heavily influenced by the work of Wilfred Bion, Winnicott, field theory, systems thinking, and trauma and the body.
Consultation is flexible and can be structured by the therapist in whatever way suits their need: occasional, as needed, or ongoing to follow and support a more challenging treatment. I offer in person sessions at my Oakland office, or anywhere the therapist is located via online videoconferencing.

In working with students and candidates who undergo extensive training to do clinical work, developing the capacity to trust one’s instincts, to integrate thinking and professional identity, and develop one’s own unique therapeutic voice and sensibilities is never a straightforward process. Spaces for learning that encourage vulnerability and freedom of thought are essential for this stage of professional growth.
This case conference group seminar for early career professionals meets weekly for 15 week sections, with a maximum of 5 participants. Each member will have the opportunity to present three consecutive sessions, engaging in rich group exploration and discussion of clinical material. We will be focused on enhancing our understanding of the transference/counter-transference field, and listening for unconscious process during the clinical hour. Occasional readings may be incorporated, guided by questions or issues that emerge from the seminar.
